West Village reimagines urban living, blending the old and new to foster and create a vibrant precinct in Brisbane’s West End. The $1.1 billion development, 2.6ha mixed-use and master-planned community boasts a 6 Star Green Star community rating and includes 1,000 residences and 14,000sqm of commercial and retail outlets. The developers, Sekisui House, a world-leading building company established in Japan in 1960, have a simple philosophy: love of humanity. This unique and deeply human approach to modern living, rooted in service and community, sees Sekisui House create developments that elevate and honour neighbourhoods, winning them a slew of awards in the process. West Village is no exception.

This modern village, aptly built on the iconic Peters Ice Cream Factory site, looks to the past to move into the future. Built in 1928, the Peters Ice Cream Factory opened its doors on Boundary St in West End, creating jobs for hundreds of local workers. Factory workers from all walks of life worked alongside each other, and the factory became a central part of the increasingly multicultural West End community. Paying homage to this rich heritage, the West Village team carefully restored the factory, which became home to retail and commercial spaces.

The Retail Designers were engaged as the Retail Design Manager, working closely with the West Village team to review and refine the design guidelines to suit where the development was heading. The retail zone, which consists of a new building and the oldPeters Factory, includesHarris Farm Markets, Metro Arts, Mott & Mulberry, and Betty’s Burgers. The Retail Designers were responsible for overseeing the internal and external malls, ensuring that each tenancy felt seamless and consistent. We were appointed as the Interior Designer for Mott & Mulberry and assisted with the Harris Farm Markets tenancy. Incorporating features of the pre-existing architecture created a narrative between the modern and heritage elements of West Village. Honouring the history whilst building for the future means that West Village’s timeless design will be enjoyed for generations to come.
